It actually was this one that inspired me to start this blog. I always loved music but didn’t have quite enough in my pocket back then to pursue my affairs with music. So then I came up with the idea of building up my own music system which I could use as a personal machine to listen to. I was 12yrs back then. I started slow and build a cheap one using ICs LA3161 and LA4440. I then kept on modifying it. By the time I had been into my profession for 7 yrs I had plugged in a pair each of tweeters, mid-ranges and subs. I measured up all the dimensions for the perfect resonance and got the speaker boxes built from a local furniture shop.

Later when I got married, my wife had problems handling my rig bulging out of nowhere on the desk (ya, the actual machine and PCB weren’t even placed inside a cabinet because… it simply worked for me out-of-the-box :)… Every time my wife tried to handle it, I had to do some repairs before I could use it again. I then realized it was time to archive my only asset (I can’t count my wife as an asset — no art over would — until they are females) and move on.
I had two choices and I could go for Philips or a Sony system. After taking a look on the sites it was a easy decision to make. The top of the line from Philips was no match for a Sony MHC GN1100D and I didn’t want to compromise on any aspect of the machine or sound for that matter. I still do not know why I choose to stick with Philips all this time.
And then one fine day I bought this thumping ground shaking system to my home. I should say that it came out to be worth every penny spent. I do need all the features like tonnes of presets, dual full logic cassette deck with auto-reverse on both. The remote though isn’t a full-feature remote, it still does get the work done. The 25cm sub came as the icing on the cake. It could push in all the drum beats into the heart of the belly. (Did I just write that?) Phew… I always believed I was a purist.
So now that we had this music system that we could be proud of and could listen to it when we wanted, I remembered of my tabla which I had bought for one of my friends (who had to leave it with me because he moved). It had since been used by my friends club since I don’t know how to play one. I finally bought it back in home.
And did I tell you what I bought with the music system? Well my all time favorites K.L. Saigal; I bought a couple of them actually (it of course is a different matter that I can only play it in the absence of my wife or when my father is with me - that way I know I’m safe).
I chose a component music system as I wasn’t sure if I could afford the purist choices to the likes of Jamo, Yamaha. A music system of the stature of Sony MHC GN1100D does well on the tracks of A. R. Rehman and makes it an enjoyable experience. I do get confused by the functionality of the Groove function which claims to enhance the bass and has three settings - off, groove (default), v-groove. It tends to enhance the LFE and seemingly even the mids to a certain extent.
One thing I miss the most is the tuner for MW and SW. I do like to listen to BBC once in a blue moon. Apart from that I can’t think of anything else. It’s a great buy and an asset that I look forward to enjoy. Which music system do you use?
